Flying High

With RemServ sponsoring 15-year client Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) annual awards for the first time, Jimmy did a sterling job as RemServ’s guest-speaking representative.

Although so nervous he couldn’t eat his dessert before presenting an award on behalf of RemServ, adrenaline not only got him over the line but a number of senior leaders from BCE personally thanked him, with interest amongst principals to facilitate staff salary packaging events at schools.

“Partnering with Brisbane Catholic Education is a great opportunity to further strengthen the RemServ brand within the whole of the Brisbane Catholic Education diocese. Attending the awards and presenting was a great opportunity to engage with senior stakeholders in a more relaxed environment,” Jimmy says.

If Jimmy was flying high after that, it was nothing on his efforts as part of the committee behind the recent Model Aircraft World Championships, held at Warwick (Queensland) on 19 to 26 August.

Staff insiders at RemServ say Jimmy has been “talking non-stop for at least a year” about the event, which featured 21 countries and appeared on 7NEWS here.

The remote aircraft – which can take up to six months to build – fly for seven minutes, reaching an altitude of 1,000 feet.

For Jimmy, who has been flying radio-controlled model aircrafts competitively for more than 30 years (“no, I am not good enough to be on a team representing Australia”), being part of such an event has been quite the journey.

“All international competitive aero sports, including model aircraft are governed by the World Air Sports Federation (FAI),” he explains.

“I have served on a number of national aerobatic model aircraft committees over the years, and I am currently on the international committee for electronic-scoring software and on the FAI board of the aerobatic model aircraft world cup.”

A discovery in 2019 Australia hadn’t hosted the World Championships in almost 30 years prompted Jimmy to put in a bid to the FAI to be granted the rights to host this year’s championships. From there he put together a committee of seven people including himself.

“It was fantastic to be involved in something that is my out-of-work passion at this level. The memories and friendships developed over the event will last with me for a lifetime.”
