Step 1: Job Search
When searching for new career opportunities, the following factors should be considered:
1. The Organisation
Visit the company’s web site and find out who they are, what they do and what their
values are. Then determine whether you can associate yourself with the company’s
products/services and values.

the McMillan Shakespeare Group.
2. Work/Life Balance
To fulfil your full potential both in your career and personal life, a healthy ‘Work/Life
Balance’ is critical. Consider the following factors when looking for a job:
- Location, how much time will be spent commuting to and from work?
- Hours of work (nights, days, weekends etc.). Will the job fit in with your other
commitments (family, hobbies, sports etc.)
3. Job Specifications
Take your time searching for roles to ensure both your and the company’s requirements
are met. Read the job advertisement carefully and if available read the ‘Position
Description’. If you meet the minimum requirements for the job and the job is in
line with your career objectives then proceed to complete the job application.
Step 2: Online Application

> Telephone Interview
Your resume and online application will be screened to assess your suitability for
the role. If you meet the requirements of the position you will be contacted for
a Telephone Interview, usually within 5 – 10 working days.
Be prepared for the Telephone interview:
- Research the company
- Make sure you have a good understanding of the role and are able to differentiate
the role from other roles that you have applied for
- If the time or location is not convenient, ask for an alternate time and arrange
for a call back.
Note: Some roles do not require a telephone interview. Should the role that you
have applied for not require a telephone interview you will be contacted via phone
or email to discuss the process going forward.
> Preparing for the Interview
First impressions last so be prepared, alert and stay focused from the minute you
walk in. Remember there will be other candidates being considered for the available
roles so in order to give yourself the best chance of success remember to:
- Arrive 5 – 10 minutes early
- Be well presented (Smart business attire)
- Research the company (Via the internet, job advertisement, position description
etc.)
- Think about the challenges, motivations, dislikes and highlights of your career
to date
- Have a good understanding of the role and how the role fits into your ambitions
/ career goals
The interview will be a ‘Behavioural Event’ interview in which you will be asked
to draw on past work related experiences. The best way to answer behavioural based
interview questions is by using the ‘STAR’ methodology.
- Situation: Describe a situation you were involved in .Ideally difficult issues that
resulted in a positive outcome.
- Task: Describe the tasks involved
- Action: Talk about the various actions you took to resolve the issue
- Results: What results directly followed because of your actions
In some instances you may be called back for 2nd or even 3rd interviews. These interviews
are usually to meet other members of the organisation. This is a good opportunity
to gain a stronger feel for the team culture and find out more about the role and
organisation from another person’s perspective.
